Petoskey MI, Leo's Alley Way (May 29 Memorial Day Weekend) Part.1
The Mrs., Hucker and I took a walk downtown Petoskey yesterday.
The sun was poking its head in and out of the clouds, the apple blossom's are blooming
and the smell of summer was floating around.
The alley way behind Leo's bar, Ethnic Creations and the Mitchell Street Pub is pretty famous
by Northern Michigan standards.
I dont know how many local bands have had their promo pictures taken there, high school seniors, engagement photos etc.... But regardless of how many photos have been snapped in this little alley way it will always be one of the prettiest spots in Petoskey.
Here are some photos of the alley way, they way I see it....
This is my favorite shot for part 1.
Here are the specs!
Canon 60d shooting .RAW . Sigma 10-20mm ex lens @ 10mm
(shutter = 1/160, f/8.0, ISO= 100)
I used Adobe's Camera Raw program to process the .Raw file.
Inside the program I saturated some of the oranges, desaturated
some of the res and yellows and converted it to B&W.
After converting it I went in to the TONE CURVE tab and
brought out the highlights, lights and turned down the shadows.
I love the apple blossoms in Petoskey!
Anytime you can contrast nature against architecture you will
walk away with some interesting to look at.
I really liked the two tone of this door, and the steps crossing just
above it added to the mystery of it all.
If you click on this picture and enlarge it you will see some really
interesting stuff going on!
The cobwebs in the corner, the pollen on the glass, the construction
going on inside the building, the cars and parking in the reflection!
Pretty neat if you ask me!
I have been thinking a whole lot about perspective lately,
and how it can change the way people think or feel about anything.
Photography is a great way to mess around with perspective and get
an inside look at what it really is.
The next four pictures are all of the same general area.
What I did to test out the different perspectives was this.
In this one I went against the natural grain of the alley way.
Crossing my lens and camera body against the lines of the buildings,
trees and retaining walls.
In this one brought the camera body up a little bit from the first frame to
to match my frame to the angle of the building in the foreground, then
focused hard immediately in front of me to gain a good depth of field.
This next one followd the previous with the foreground building laying
naturally with the camera, then I added more to the other side of the frame
by pulling back a bit and lengthening my depth of field.
On this one I noticed how the alley ways road was
transitioned up in to the wall of the building.
So I laid the bottom of my camera body flat on the little
transition of alley way to get this kind of organic feel
out of the lines the architecture in the alley way form.
It's amazing to me that such little movements can either make or break
the way people feel about a photograph. And such is life. Where you are standing when a certain thing happens dictates how you interoperate said event. And the guy standing across the street will have seen the same event but have a completely different idea of what happened due to his own perspective.
Crazy, I know!
Once again, I was trying to contrast nature and
architecture.
My wife Bre pointed out these bees to me. There were tons of them
buzzing around pollinating the trees and bumping in to one another.
I must have taken 500 photos of these dang bees!!!!
It was driving me insane! I just couldn't get the shot that I wanted...
This is one that satisfied my goal.
Now I have been in this alley way more times than I can count,
and for some reason have never noticed this other little alley way that leads
to these apartments. I just struck my fancy, so I took a couple pics and we rolled out!
Part 2 of this shoot will be posted soon!
I didn't want to drowned anyone in a pile of photos!
I hope everyone has a great Memorial Day Weekend!
Be Safe!

A Look Over the Bear River Valley
We live in a cool little neighborhood in Petoskey that has quite a cool location.
Our turn around sits on top of a hill and is situated so that the Bear River Valley
is our first site in the morning.
A few days ago I woke up and noticed out the window how beautiful it looked!
The sun was just coming up, there was fog coming off the river and the trees are just
bursting with foliage this spring!
If you enlarge this last photo you can see the fog coming off the river on the left hand side of the frame!

Charlevoix Seniors - Spring Love - 2011
I have known the Stebe family for a long time now. Our paths crossed sometime in 2004 and they immediately took my family in as their own and likewise.
Scott and Laura have 3 amazing children, Brennan the oldest is a student at Ferris State University, Cassidy the middle is graduating from Charlevoix High School in just a few days and Erin their youngest daughter is quite the talented singer.
I have had the privilege of watching their kids grow up and play a small part in their lives.
Recently I was able to do a favor for Laura and Scott by taking some photo's of Cassidy and her boyfriend Braiden Kanoop (also of Charlevoix, and also a Senior) before they graduate and embark along their life journeys.
These two make a great couple.
Far removed from the "faddy" or "trendiness" of high school relationships,
Cassidy and Braiden were a pleasure to shoot!
After graduation Braiden is going off to bootcamp in California for
the Marine Corps Reserves!
After completing his training he will attend College in Michigan.
Cassidy will be heading to Aquinas college this fall!
Normally when I shoot couples I ask a ton of question in an effort to get some
relaxation out of them. I asked Braiden and Cassidy to tell me an embarrassing story
about one another, they paused and thought for a moment, and both replied "I don't know any".
Then busted up laughing!
This is one of my favorites from the shoot. They both look so relaxed and open
with one another. Plus this old storage building and loading dock made for an awesome
backdrop.
We noticed these train tracks not too far from where we were currently shooting
so I asked Braiden and Cassidy to walk the tracks while holding hands.
Easy does it!
These two passed this team working exercise with flying colors!
Neither of them touched the ground once!
After the train tracks we headed down to the waterfront.
I had a plan to shoot in the grass but the spring time bugs were all over,
making it super hard to execute the original plan.
These two are troopers so we scoured around looking for a low bug
area and came away with some pretty awesome shots!
Life is a trip and these two young adults are fortunate to have each other.
Both are smart and steadfast in their choices and have bright futures ahead of them!
Good luck to both of you in all that you do!

HELLO Randall Erno - Petoskey Musician Reps the 231
You may not know this... but you know Randall Erno.
Regardless of how old you are. Irrelevant to what social circles you travel in. No matter what types of music you listen to, or the style of clothes you wear, if you're from the 231 your life has most likely been touched by Randy (in one way or another).
That show you went to when you were in 10th grade? - Randy had something to do with it.
That night you got 3 free shots at Papa Lou's? - Randy had something to do with that as well.
That friend of a friend that helped your other friend move last week? - That was Randy.
That local indie-rock bands T-shirt you're wearing RIGHT NOW! - Randy......
I've known Randall Erno for more than a decade now.
A staple in the Northern Michigan music scene, Randy has been around the block. No scratch that.... Randy has been around the world!
I met Randy sometime around the year 2000 while he and I were both playing music in different bands. He was this taller than average eccentric type, that was bursting at the seams to tell you all about the new jam pluto's mine had up their sleeves, or the battle of the bands he'd just heard about. Our paths crossed often for a few years as we both continued to play music in groups that had revolving members.
A show at the DillWorth in Boyne City, another in a backyard in Charlevoix, the Battle On The Bay in Petoskey. The crowd changed, band members changed, but you could always count on Randy.
The Northern michigan music scene is a strange one. Full of kids struggling to rebel, looking for something more out of life or trying to be cool. It's very often that new faces make their way on to the scene strumming a guitar, playing open mike nights and then just fade off in to the darkness, ready for their new FAD-FULL journey. Randy, and a few others from our general age group, have broken this mold and made their own. With a creative mind, a positive attitude and the hunger for success on his own terms, Randall has made a lasting impact on his scene.
If life had key words these would be just a few of the ones for Randy.
Bass. Keys. Spoken Word. Art. Management. Guitar. Drums. Loops. One Man Band. Friend. Taco Bell. NCMC. Anchors For Reality. Phoenix Ignition. This Twilight City. Myspace. FaceBook. Mega Sky Fish. Northern Michigan. Travel. Vans. Tours. Europe. Family. Papa Lou's. Tattoos. Shirt Off His Back.
Lets face it, if it wasn't for Randy and a few others..... Your Northern Michigan Music scene would SUCK.

How did you get in to playing music in Northern Michigan?
My father bought me my first bass guitar when I was 14 as a Christmas present. I had always fiddled around with his instruments and drooled watching him shred 80’s metal licks. I quickly fell in love with music as a means of creative expression. My senior year my English teacher, Glen Young gave us an assignment to “Do Something That Would Change The World.” I decide that put together a concert at my High School and donate the profit to the YMCA that was being constructed in town. The show was nearly sold out and raised $700 for the construction of the youth center. Hoping new events would fill the town.
Three funny things became of this:
1.I was nearly expelled from high school from the final band “Last Place Champion’s” song “I Eat Drugs.”
2. I later hosted one event at the YMCAand was physically assaulted by the owner for bringing three metal project which were a “disgrace to the community.”
3. Mr. Young’s son Graham is the vocalist/guitarist of one of my favorite band’s in town Orange Magic. They are an extremely talented funk-rock project, still in high school. Open a new browser and check them out.
Who was your first show with? Where was it at? and what do you remember most about it?
The first show I ever performed was in my sophomore year of high school in East Detroit. I played two songs on an electric guitar solo. This was a huge school of 4,000+ students. I was terrified. The thing I remember most about it was the winning act was a rock band where the lead singer had a pink mullet/Mohawk (at the same time! Picture this), which he also wore in his senior pictures.
What was the last show you played? Where was it at and what do you remember most about it?
The last show I did was in Berlin, Germany. My best friends landlord bonded with me over my Boss RC-20 loop station tattoo and invited me on a couple of his dates. German bars are great, they love cheering super loudly. And when they have an open mic night, every single musician jams with one another, which is how it should be!
do you notice a difference between the scenes of 'old' and 'new'?
Back in the day there seemed to be a touch more diversity and community. There weren’t cell phones for kids to text while watching bands. They were too busy pumping there fist’s. Also, “mosh” culture has changed. Kids used to mindlessly bump into one another and now it’s more of a martial art form. The hip hop scene in northern, MI is finally blossoming, which is great. Some hip hop bars don’t do well with bands so they play DJ’s. But instead they can have these local artist’s perform!
After being involved in the Northern Michigan Music scene for so long, what do you hope for it?
I have big dreams for every band in this area. I believe we have a unique community of creative indivuals who are trapped in the top of this mitten. I believe it is critical for northern, MI fans to support these bands as much as they can. The biggest cities are hours away, without local support these artist will never transplant to other area’s. There is something for everyone to listen to. My biggest dream is that music will be valued as a career and not a hobby.
AND THAT OUR LOCAL MEDIA (NEWSPAPERS/RADIOS) WILL CREATE OPPURTUNITIES FOR THIS PROJECT INSTEAD OF FOCUSING ON REBROADCASTING NATIONAL NEWS.
Any words of wisdom for young musicians in the community?
Being a musician isn’t what u may think. It’s not all girls, booze and money. In fact, it’s quite the opposite. It takes hours of rehearsing material until your so sick of it, that you don’t even want to hear it anymore. And although girls may find you initially attractive, chances are they are going to break up with you, because you spend all your free time performing. Gas prices are at an all time high and CD sales are at an all time low.
BUTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTT
If you can ignore these factors and concentrate on music that is pure to you, that you have FUN playing, then others will catch on to that. It’s a beautiful adventure that will lead you to road trips with your best friends. And the people you meet along the journey are truly the reason that keeps me in this industry. Don’t waste your time on the internet promoting your music. Concentrate your energy into making a good product and hire John Curtis to do your web promotion.
Tell me about your world, you do much more than just play music? (art, managing, organizing shows etc...)
I am recently engaged, that’s fun! A whole new life in it’s own right. I am also, an artist. I do a lot of abstract images with pastels. I am currently organizing show’s all over the nation and as always in my home town of Petoskey. I’m currently working on managing my first band that I’m not a member of The Galactic Sherpa’s and Icebokz (my little brother’s hip hop project). I graduated from NCMC with a degree in New Media Marketing. I just got back from my first international adventure, that was terrific.
Tell me about your latest projects?
MEGAskyfish is my heart and soul. I created this project originally as a onemanband, I recorded all the instruments (minus the saxophone), mixed, mastered and designed the artwork. I’ve been doing loops show’s for three years now and this month I finally put a full band lineup together. www.megaskyfish.com
I also tour playing drums with a band from Brookly, NY called Darling Waste. The songwriter Lance Williams is a close personal friend of mine and we’ve shared many adventures together. We are touring July 1st – Aug. 1st all over the east coast. www.darlingwaste.com Come find us!
This fall I’ll be playing guitar for the Jake Allen Band. Jake is honestly one of my absolutely favorite Michigan artist’s. He is an outstanding songwriter. Slap guitarist and multi-instrumentalist. We’ll be doing a massive 30 state tour in Sept.
I also perfrom as a freelance studio musician, I recently tracked drums on Costellar’s “Vacation” record. And will be recording for Kevin Merril in Rochestor, NY this summer!
